Two minor children were found in what appeared to be an abandoned bus in Louisiana this past week. They were supposedly in the care of their aunt, while their parents served time for embezzlement. They were reported by a mail carrier, who noticed the children appeared to be unattended. This to me brings to mind several social issues. The father claims that the bus is suitable for the family, as it has power, heat, and running water, however to many this would be considered unsanitary or unsafe living conditions. Additionally, the children 5 and 11, did not attend school and do not possess age appropriate skills. The question really in this case is who is at fault here? Is it the parents, the aunt, or some other unnamed individual located on the property? This is a criminal case, and several charges should be brought to the person or persons found responsible. But the big question in this economy is...Were they living conditions unsafe or is this purely about them not being under the direct guardianship of an adult?
I believe the issue has a lot to do with The lack of a guardian. These kids are better off in a foster home, orphanage or adoption center. At least here their opportunities are noticed and they can achieve some sort of social skills. Not to mention that they will have a place to sleep, other children to socialize with and food.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't even consider thinking that maybe a school bus is appropriate for a child to live in. Just looking at the situation you know something is not right. If it were you, would you like to live in a school bus? What is important to me is that these kids are taken to a social worker and are given what they are entitled to which is living space, food and water and the opportunity to receive an education. Without these things it is not fair for them to be given the same responsibility as privileged children when they become adults. This kind of disposition is very sad and depressing not only for the children but for our entire society.
