California mining operations contaminate our environment
The article is here
Selenium is a naturally occuring element that, when disturbed, can be released as a toxic byproduct of human activities such as farming, mining, and burning coal. Tis metal can cause disturbing affects in human health such as hair and fingernail loss and in sever cases gastrointestinal problems. It is regulated in drinking water but can be much more dangerous to wildlife because it causes deformities for birds, fish and reptiles.
Past events within the 1970s and 1980s have shown that selenium is a serious health hazard yet it seems that no matter how much research we have done in the last 40 years with this metal, it is still causing deformities amongst our wildlife. This is obviously a display of negligence on our part as human beings. We continue to harvest dangerous metals and fail to follow/create health codes that would protect and control any deformities or hazardous effects on living creatures. It is appalling that we have such a blatant disregard for our environment and our own safety. In fact, you can see that the research was not done correctly because the article states that it was the rate of serious deformities in baby fish were systematically under measured. The research originally stated that deformities in the fish would be at a 20% rate but the actual rate is 70%.
I do not like this negligence in research at all. The article in question is about events that are taking place here in California! I don't want 20% or 70% of deformities in fish due to poor research and selenium mining. What is next? Honestly, I do like my face but I don't want another face growing out of my back. I definitely love chicken but wouldn't be interested in buying one with 3 legs so I can have more drumsticks. I think we should do more research and impose/enforce laws to contain the deformities in our environment so our next generation isn't deformed as these fish are.
