Home-schoolers aloud to play sports at public schools.
A bill was recently past in Virginia allowing students who are home schooled to Play sports at public schools. Opponents for the bill are arguing that potentially this could take spots from kids that are attending the school. They are also arguing that they wont be held to the same standards as kids in there academic program. There are currently 25 states that now allow the home-schoolers to play. In my opinion letting a child be part of a team will teach them skills they cant learn in school.

I agree that it will help them to build more effective social skills. But I wonder why they cant attend the high school they want to play for? I fear people abusing this by doing home school so they dont have to worry about gradesbut being able to play football.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, people homeschool for entirely different reasons than avoiding high school grades. Usually, parents feel that they can educate their children better at home than what teachers can at a public school (and this is often true depending on the school). Having been homeschooled through high school, I know that homeschooling is a huge challenge for parents and it won't happen just for sports.
DeleteSeriously, if home-schooled children would like to participate in public school sports maybe they should should attend public school. I mean their parents pay property taxes that sustain and support these schools. You need take advantage of the entire public educational process or just stay at home. I understand that homeschooling has many purposes and advantages, yet it seems slightly unfair. Most extracurricular programs are limited and can not even support students who attend public school much less the homeschooler.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I feel that people are too politically correct. I feel that if a kid wants to play a sport with a school let him play a sport. Most of the time it is not up to the child to decide if they are going to be home schooled or not. Along the lines of taking a kids spot who attends the school, that’s ridiculous it does not matter if you’re homeschooled or no the better player should have the spot. I feel like our society babies our young adults far too much and way to long. “Life isn’t fair” not only does it help the students who are home schooled with social skills it also helps the kids attending school with being able to accept outsides who may or may not be better than you. All in all I think it should be allowed for all kids to be involved in school events.
ReplyDeleteThis is kind of a toss up for me... My son currently plays basketball and there were not enough spots for the children that attend his school, let alone anyone else. Although it may be beneficial to the children and teach them valuable skills, I believe that children attending the school should have the first opportunity.
